Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: Damascus, January An old one-eyed man, crippled in his left hand, is
languishing in Bashar el Assad’s jails. Imprisoned in the greatest secrecy, his name is
Aloïs Brunner. He is a former Nazi dignitary, responsible for the deportation
of more Jews to the gas chambers in Europe. In 1943, SS Aloïs Brunner took
charge of the Drancy camp. Drancy, final stage for all
the Jews rounded up in France, before their departure to the death camps.
For Aloïs Brunner and his lieutenants, the hunt for all the Jews in
France becomes their sole obsession. In Drancy, on a daily basis, internees
suffered torture, humiliation and harassment. Our story begins on the morning
of March 1938, when the 8th Army of the Wehrmacht crossed the
Austro-German border to invade Austria. Hitler’s dream of a Reich bringing together the
German-speaking territories was finally accomplished. The Nazification of Austria will
take place without any resistance. A man, long committed to
the Nazi ideal, is at the forefront among the population to cheer the invasion of
German troops. This man is Alois Brunner. In Vienna, Brunner came into contact
with a certain Adolf Eichmann, the director of the central office
for Jewish emigration. Brunner managed to convince
Eichmann to take him on as his deputy. No communication
When Eichmann and Brunner take stock of their action, more Austrian Jews will have been forced
to emigrate between and the start of the war. June 1940, it was France’s turn
to fall under the Nazi yoke. Marshal Pétain obtains full powers
and appoints a collaborative government. Gradually anti-Semitism
will gangrene France… On August 1941, a
major roundup took place in Paris. Integrated within the city of La Muette, the
Drancy camp is structured around bars of adjoining buildings, closed
by a belt of barbed wire. Inside and around the camp,
French gendarmes are responsible for monitoring the internees.
At the beginning of 1942, the status of European Jews
changed suddenly with the implementation of the Final Solution.
‘ << I’m going to show these damn Prussians
how we handle these Jewish pigs >>. It is in these terms that Brunner expresses himself when he arrives in Berlin, with the order to accelerate the
deportations which are dragging in the eyes of the Führer. Three months later, Jewish
Berliners will be deported.
In Europe now, the wearing of the yellow star has become widespread for all Jews aged
over. In France, this obligation displays Vichy’s policy of persecution in broad daylight.
The French population can no longer pretend to ignore it.
The roundup organized by Eichmann, Brunner’s superior, will remain
infamous under the name of the Vel d’Hiv roundup.
Fredj At the turn of the winter of 42-43, throughout Europe
the traffic of convoys of deportees began to intensify towards the death camps.
At this time, Alois Brunner arrived in Greece with orders to empty the
Salonika ghetto of all its inhabitants. In the meantime, the rate of deportations in
France has fallen considerably. Certain voices hostile to the anti-Semitic policy of the
Vichy regime ended up being heard. In the spring of 1943, no more convoys left
Drancy, to the great dismay of the German General Staff. Upon his arrival in Drancy, Brunner
completely reorganized the camp. Brunner did not come to Paris alone. He is
accompanied by a handful of Nazis like him, with an immeasurable hatred of Jews…
In the 1950s, the Drancy camp was rehabilitated. Nowadays, it is a seemingly banal city
, but heavily marked by its past. Under Brunner the deportation was
a rational, bureaucratic and implacable organization… In total Brunner will send more
convoys mainly from Bobigny station, located km from Drancy… A final
journey into the unknown for Jews. (No relaunch on train convoy)

new event occurred in Drancy; Brunner had to come back from the South urgently.
An escape attempt has just been foiled… The team that pierced the tunnel is
also the one responsible for managing the camp. The sanction is merciless.
Towards the end of 1943, Brunner entered into a sordid race of arrests. Is the number
of convoys to be sent to the death camps expected to increase every month? To satisfy
his obsessions he will spare no one. To fill more and more convoys, Brunner
then turned to the UGIF, General Union of Israelites of France, which was responsible for the
management of certain hospitals and orphanages. Shorten
August 1944… The Allied advance on Paris could have stopped
Brunner’s macabre work, but once again, while the Reich on all fronts collapsed, the Nazi
demonstrated unfailing obstinacy. Through bargaining Brunner will find an arrangement with certain
Wehrmacht officers. On Sunday August 1944, the last
interned Jew left the Drancy camp. But the camp does not close
and for the first time, cameras are authorized to film the new occupants.
Back in Vienna, Brunner receives a new mission. Eichmann sends him to continue his
macabre work in Bratislava in Slovakia. Hidden behind a false identity,
Brunner returns to an ordinary civilian life, without being worried in the
least by his criminal past. In 1960, Brunner’s fate suddenly changed, with the capture by the Israeli secret services
of Eichmann in South America. Wishing to judge him, the Mossad exfiltrates
the former Nazi leader to Jerusalem. In response to this kidnapping plan,
Brunner receives a mysterious package in Damascus. Eichmann’s trial will be able to
take place peacefully. Live + hanging Like other Nazi criminals before
him, Eichmann was hanged on May. Black glasses, thin mustache,
assumed name, Brunner aka Georg Fisher, thought he was moving to Damascus as discreetly as
possible, but the Mossad was watching him. This time, the Israeli secret services
are firmly determined to get rid of him for good. From France, the Klarsfeld couple,
who actively campaign against the impunity of former Nazi criminals,
took over the Brunner file. It was then that a twist of events occurred in
1985, when two German journalists managed to approach the former Nazi criminal.
